K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Cultural clashes Earlier this week Pam and I attended a preview of a movie that will be in theaters on March 21. It is titled "God’s Not Dead." We were very impressed! It is an extremely well-produced drama that used apologetics and honest human emotion to confront the real issues we face in the secular world. I strongly encourage pastors and church leaders to attend the movie and take the youth in your church with you. The producers duplicated real examples of religious hatred and persecution that connect with our experience. Untold numbers of high school and college students have been the target of religious bigotry from teachers and professors who have no interest in truth. The movie illustrates the challenge of those classroom episodes and provides foundational apologetics in response. The study of apologetics has grown significantly in popularity in the past decade. This is a very good thing! Believers need to invest a healthy portion of our time in the study of background information to support the biblical truths we value. Apologetics is a field of Christian study that deals with the rational defense of the faith against objections and in answer to questions. It uses facts and reason to respond to those who do not understand biblical truth. It is a response to 1 Peter 3:15, "But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence." On this subject, did you watch the Ken Ham/Bill Nye debate Tuesday night? The much publicized debate raised the question, "Is creation a viable model in today’s scientific era?" It was a fair, courteous and challenging discussion of the issues of creation and evolution. As Ham pointed out, both sides have the same evidence; the difference is how it is interpreted, which is established by the starting point of worldviews. Visit answersingenesis.org to purchase a copy of this interesting discussion. Cultural clashes do not surprise us. The Bible tells us to expect them. As we face opposition to the faith we value, do so with grace and strength. We hope the Biblical Recorder strengthens you as you grow strong in the faith. Email me: [email protected] |
