There's value in the team
One of the most valuable lessons in the field of sports is the team concept. Everyone on the team has value, and each one is essential for victory. Some players may be popular with the crowd, but the team cannot win without the full participation of the lesser-known members of the team, also.
With our cultural focus on individualism, so much of the team concept is lost. That is very sad! We may be producing a generation of losers who know nothing of the value of a team. Their life will be like the lone, stranded mariner on a deserted Pacific island, with little hope of being rescued.
One of the reasons I enjoy being a Baptist is the fact that we like to work together. We work together in a community and call it a church. We work together in a larger region and call it an association. We cooperate on a even larger level and call it a state convention. And, we work together worldwide, giving our cooperative efforts the title "Southern Baptist Convention." Whatever you call it, it’s still a team. We desperately need the whole team!
This week I spent some time with the men who are a valuable part of our Baptist team. We call them associational missionaries or directors of missions. They meet several times each year for a retreat at Caraway. It is a time of refreshment and challenge for their unique calling.
They have a tough job, but it is made more difficult when churches lose sight of the team’s value. They are missionaries who help our churches work together in Kingdom partnership. I hope you will pray for your association’s leadership and let them know that you want to be part of the team. We can do so much more together!
Alright team, let’s break the huddle and go for a victory!
