A great pastor is gone

The accidental death of Bishop Phillip Davis last Saturday is painful and tragic. His family and the church family he led so capably are in shock. Phil was a great friend and brother. He emailed me just last week to ask for a written endorsement of his next book. He was genuine, he was real – no pretense in this man.

Phil served as first vice president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina in 1997. Looking at available records, Phil Davis is likely the only African American to serve as an officer of the BSC – and that was 18 years ago. He left that office to serve a short time on the staff of the North American Mission Board, but Phil realized his passion was for ministry in the local church. So he returned to Charlotte where God blessed his life and ministry in mighty ways. Please pray for Cynthia (Phil’s wife), his family and the believers in the Nations Ford Community Church family.

Have you seen the movie War Room yet? As we reported, it had an outstanding opening last weekend. One news source reported income of $11 million for the weekend. But the dollars are nothing compared to the unmeasured spiritual impact of the movie’s message. I pray that many believers will change our prayer habits after seeing War Room. I believe desperate prayer is our only hope!

Give generously to the North Carolina Missions Offering this week and every week in September. Of course you can give any time during the year, but this month’s emphasis reminds us of the great value of the ministries supported by NCMO. Read the many stories in the Biblical Recorder and on BRnow.org that tell how God is using NCMO dollars to impact lostness and make disciples.
