Phoenix convention headlines prayer

Your Biblical Recorder staff has been covering the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) annual meeting in Phoenix this week. About 5,000 messengers enjoyed great fellowship, heard encouraging reports about the ministry of Baptists around the world and took action on important business matters of the convention.

Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, Tenn., was re-elected president of the SBC. Walter Strickland was elected to the office of first vice president. He is the special advisor to the president for diversity and instructor of theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jose Abella, lead pastor of Providence Road Church in Miami, Fla., was elected second vice president. He also preached one of the sermons for the Pastor's Conference.

H.B. Charles Jr, pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., was elected as the first black president of the Pastor’s Conference. As we previously reported, the conference featured preaching from pastors of average-sized churches. They preached through the letter of Philippians. Read more about the conference here.

The main focus of this annual meeting was prayer and reaching the lost. President Gaines used his presidential address to preach about the essential place of prayer in every believer's life. Messengers were called to prayer regularly throughout the meeting.

There is much more to share about the convention! Check our website, BRnow.org, for more news.
