Find the right resources

One of the first things a professor shared with me as I began my freshman year in college was, “You don’t have to know everything. But, a good education will teach you where to get the answers when you need them.” There has been a thousand times in my ministry that I experienced the impact of the professor’s statement. I’ve faced questions that I could not answer and problems I could not resolve, but I found the right resources to help me navigate treacherous waters and reach a safe harbor.

Having access to the right resources is the key! The primary, undisputed resource for problems is always the Bible, coupled with prayer. That’s the best starting point; and sometimes that’s all we need.

The second most valuable resource is people. I've been amazed to see how God has uniquely equipped others to walk with me through difficult problems. Through the counsel and support of my wife, friends, fellow pastors and directors of missions, I was able to maintain my stride in ministry even though I faced issues that could have derailed me. The Proverbs teach us there is great wisdom in the counsel of others who love God.

If you are a church leader, there is a huge resource pool that must be on your list: the people who serve on the staff of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and related organizations. In my last 10 years as a pastor, I called on at least a dozen of these men and women to come alongside me and our church in ministry. They are equipped to help with church financial matters, organizational issues, conflict, pastor search, deacon ministry, campus ministry, worship, church revitalization, prayer, disciple-making, missions, stewardship, church planting, disaster relief, women’s ministry, youth ministry, Bible Study groups, reaching internationals, church websites, facilities and the list goes on!

Do you have any idea how helpful the convention staff can be to you? They are valuable resources you cannot afford to overlook. Call the convention’s main number (800-395-5102) and someone will be happy to serve you.

P.S. No one at the convention suggested or asked me to share my comments. I’m totally convinced that God has prepared someone to be the resource you need right now! These gifted men and women want to help you.

This week's issue of the printed Biblical Recorder is filled with resources to help you prepare for Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (January 21).
