Greear is president

The top news from Dallas, Texas this week is the election of North Carolina pastor, J.D. Greear. God will use Greear to give leadership to our Baptist family in the way he has led the Summit Church where he serves as pastor. Although several native-born N.C. Baptists have been elected to this position in recent decades, Greear is the first pastor to be elected from our state since Carl Bates served the convention in 1970-71 as our president. Bates was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Charlotte. One other North Carolinian, Paige Patterson, was elected to serve as the SBC president while serving as president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.

It seems to me that we saw a significant increase in the number of younger Baptists at the Dallas convention. Many are likely pastors, church planters, associate pastors and their families. This is good! I’m thrilled to see a younger-looking SBC annual meeting. My message to these new faces is this: Welcome! We’re very glad you came. Please come back next year. Until then, stay engaged with us! We need each other. We cannot impact lostness without working together.

Watch for more news this week from the SBC Dallas convention on BRnow.org.

This week’s print edition of the Biblical Recorder went to press the day before the Dallas convention, so you will not read any news about the week’s events in print. But you will read some great stories in the print edition, including the front page story about Mission:Dignity. Please lead your church to give a special offering to this ministry. You will be blessing those who have paved the way for our ministry today.

Have a happy Father’s Day!.
