Dallas convention yields broad news

Last week’s BRweekly was delivered to you in the middle of Southern Baptists’ annual convention in Dallas, Texas. Much more news came from Wednesday’s final sessions. Since then, your Biblical Recorder staff has regularly posted the stories on BRnow.org so you can have a full picture of the meeting. Some of that news is highlighted in this edition of the BRweekly.

Next week’s print edition will feature news from the Dallas annual meeting, since many of our readers do not depend on the Internet for their news. For many, the printed BR gives them the chance to relax and absorb the details of events and conversations from the convention. It’s important for Baptists to pay attention and stay informed. People NEED to know!

Overall, it was a great convention, with some expected bumps in the road – and a few unexpected ones. The attendance was large, the preaching was outstanding, the reports were encouraging, the resolutions were strong and the business was lively. I believe it paves the way for us to be a stronger fellowship of churches and believers – that’s what we prayed would happen.

Some controversies were defused, some lingered and at least one new tension emerged. Read the story about Vice President Mike Pence’s message to the convention. This is probably the most discussed topic since the meeting. Podcasts, blogs and social media have been overflowing with opinions – most are not favorable. The displeasure is not against Pence personally, but questioning the presence of politicians in the environment of a Baptist business meeting. This discussion will likely continue.

Thank you for depending on the Biblical Recorder as your news source. Let us know how we can serve you. Please share with us any special news from your church and association that others need to read.
