Thoughts on Baltimore '14

When the annual gathering of the messengers of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) convenes in Baltimore June 10, there will be some interesting issues "on the table" – or in this case, "in the halls," where most matters are discussed. Here are some of the items to resolve:

1. The mix of candidates for the presidency of the (SBC) is interesting. Ronnie Floyd is a respected pastor of a multi-site, mega church who has given leadership to some new life in the convention. He has led in discussions and in personal action on the matter of Great Commission missions and mission support. He has been at the forefront of spiritual revitalization through prayer and vision. He will likely be elected.

The second candidate, Jared Moore, is a pastor of a small church in Kentucky and the current second vice-president of the convention. I am not aware of any small church pastor or any second vice-president who has been elected as president of the SBC in at least 50 years.

Third to join the race is Maryland pastor Dennis Manpoong Kim. As the pastor for 23 years of a large, predominantly Korean church in the Baltimore area, he is influential and may be positioned for more votes than one might expect. We’ll see what the messengers decide.

2. There will be a lot of talk about the decline in baptisms. This is likely to be mentioned in every sermon at the pastor’s conference, in most hall discussions, from the podium and at the microphones. It is a critical issue and cannot be ignored.

3. Chatter about the Muslim student at Southwestern Seminary is not dying down. It is no small matter in the minds of some. The trustees of the seminary announced they will not deal with the matter until their executive committee meets in September. If they do not get involved sooner, they will not do their president or the seminary any favors.

I will have a few more thoughts about the Baltimore meeting in next week’s BRweekly.
