Houston scandal will not go away

Deep concerns over the Houston subpoena scandal continue to grow daily. One response to the unconstitutional bullying of pastors by city authorities is the announcement that Sunday, Nov. 2 is tagged "I Stand Sunday." Read Southern Baptist Convention President Ronnie Floyd’s call for Baptists to unite around this movement and to join the live web broadcast of a rally originating from Houston.

This week the Biblical Recorder reported that C.J. Bordeaux has called North Carolina Baptists to join the national movement. Bordeaux is president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Although he is eligible to serve another term, he has chosen not to run for reelection at the annual meeting in November.

I hope pastors and church leaders will promote this significant event in your church. This is an issue that absolutely cannot be ignored.

I am writing this column from Nashville, Tenn., where a major conference on biblical sexuality was held this week. We have posted some stories about the event. More are coming. The conference presented some strong content on the subject.

Thank you to the church family of Old Town Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. I filled the pulpit for pastor Rick Speas Sunday while he was on a mission trip. I am grateful for the sweet fellowship and genuine worship Pam and I experienced there.

It’s time to give some special emphasis to the great work of the Baptist Children’s Homes of N.C. (BCH). We ran a story in the Recorder on the long-term impact of this powerful ministry. Please read it, pray for this ministry and given generously to the Thanksgiving Offering for BCH.

It is time to VOTE! I cannot imagine a Christian who would remain silent and refuse to vote in this election. The failure to vote screams unconscionable apathy. Learn about the candidates and be an informed voter.

Don’t miss the N.C. Pastors' Conference and the annual meeting Nov. 9-11 in Greensboro. Did you download your annual meeting app yet? Get it here.

Be sure to come by the Biblical Recorder booth in Greensboro to register to win an iPad, Bibles and other fantastic prizes.

Hey pastor, do you need to talk confidentially to someone? Call the pastor care line at 1-844-PASTOR1.
