The witness of a tragedy

Since last week's BRweekly was distributed the news has been heavily weighted toward the murder of the pastor and eight other worshippers at Emanuel AME Zion Church's Wednesday night Bible study in Charleston, S.C., on June 17. The shock and horror of this unthinkable crime has been repeated by every television network and news agency. I don't think I have ever seen so many leaders groping for the right words to describe this crime. Those who are stuck in the world of selfish politics jumped on this tragedy like a tick on a dog, looking for someone to blame and sucking the life out of weary victims.

But what has captivated me the most is the powerful witness of the gospel that has radiated from Charleston. There has been no rioting, looting or violence in the streets. No buildings have been burned down, and police officers have been treated with respect. Many family members of the murder victims have publicly demonstrated grace, forgiveness and Christ-like love. News anchors have been dumb-founded by the unexplainable godly composure of many citizens of the city – especially when measured against the heinous nature of the crimes.

Tragedy does not destroy Christians. It hurts us, but it only makes us stronger. That's the witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ! Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are hurting and suffering deep pain through this crisis.
