When the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was held in Greensboro, N.C. in 2006, President Bobby Welch led in the unveiling and dedication of a statue of Billy Graham (no CP dollars were used for the statue). Graham is the world-renowned N.C. evangelist who is probably the most widely known Baptist in all of history. The bronze tribute was ‘permanently’ placed on LifeWay’s property in downtown Nashville where it has been viewed by tourists for a decade.
With the sale and relocation of LifeWay’s headquarters, the statue needed a new home. There could not be a more ideal location than Ridgecrest, LifeWay’s conference center a few miles from Graham’s home. We ran a story about the relocation of the statue in this week’s print issue of the Biblical Recorder, and the story is posted online here.
I served as chairman of the Committee on Order of Business (the program committee) of the SBC in 2006 and worked with Bobby Welch in planning the statue’s unveiling. Will Graham, grandson of the evangelist, represented the family in addressing the convention. Next followed one of the highlights of my life when Cliff Barrows shared some comments about Graham and led the convention in one of the favorite songs of Graham’s crusade meetings, "How Great Thou Art."
It was an electric moment that I cannot describe. But I will never forget standing on that stage and looking across an audience that followed Barrows’ every inflection. It was a high moment of worship. The great God we serve has given us some great servant leaders in the Graham team!
I hope you enjoy reading all of the stories and information in this week’s edition of the Biblical Recorder. We are honored to be your partners in kingdom ministry for the glory of God. I pray that this Lord's Day will be a great day in your church family!
