Why I'm staying in the Southern Baptist Convention

Why do you cooperate with the SBC?

Last week a vibrant conversation about racial issues in Southern Baptist (SBC) life erupted when a black Oklahoma minister announced his departure from the SBC. We reported that story on BRnow.org.

We also reported another perspective from a black pastor who gave his reasons for staying in the Southern Baptist family. Blogs, news articles and social media are still active with conversations favoring each side.

Times of disagreement and conflict can be great learning experiences. This is not the time to draw a line in the sand. It is time to humble ourselves, be teachable, open the scriptures and learn from the Holy Spirit. A good verse to memorize is Galatians 3:28, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Expanding to a broader question, why are you a Southern Baptist? Why do you choose to serve in God’s greater Kingdom work alongside fellow believers in the SBC? Why does your church choose to cooperate with other SBC churches to finish the Great Commission? Let’s talk about it. Feel free to share your thoughts with me. I would also like to hear how your church is intentionally breaking down the walls of racial and ethnic division in your church and community.

Have a great week! Thank you for supporting your Biblical Recorder.
