Will God 'evolve' also?

Less than a year ago, President Obama announced that his views on gay marriage had "evolved." He declared that he once opposed the "marriage" of two people of the same gender. But he has changed his mind, or "evolved." In the past week Bill and Hillary Clinton have made similar declarations. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio also joined the ranks of the "evolving," explaining that his son’s gay lifestyle convinced him to make the change.

Pardon me for saying so, but I can’t believe we are having this discussion. Social order assumes a basic level of morality – a morality that has remained unquestioned for millenniums in worldwide cultures and nations.

Some want to turn the disagreement into accusations of hate. That is a standard tactic for a weak argument. Others make it a matter of "rights." The injection of "rights" makes this a dangerous discussion for all sides, because it opens the door for the invention of other rights that are not yet on the table.

A LifeWay poll shows that the "rights" argument is convincing many Americans to "evolve." Given the moral climate of America, we are not surprised.

Do people expect God to "evolve" also? Apparently so. The liberal media’s call for the new pope to bring the Catholic church "up to date" exposes their belief that God and churches need to adjust their doctrines to match cultural shifts. Their theological shallowness is laughable and tragic.

I’ll go to sleep each night knowing that He has declared Himself immutable – unchanging. God has never issued a press statement to correct His words. He has never reversed His moral positions or adjusted doctrines. Take comfort in the unchanging God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Remember to pray for our North American missionaries and for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. They do what they do because North America needs God! Visit our AAEO resource page.
