A tale of two candidates

The front page of this week’s printed Biblical Recorder features the photos of the two announced candidates for the office of president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). J.D. Greear of Raleigh-Durham and Kenneth Hemphill of Travelers Rest, S.C., announced their candidacy last week. Hemphill is a member of First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, N.C., so that means both candidates are N.C. Baptists. Also, both men are native-born in our state.

‚ÄčIt is very interesting that the “buzz” for this year’s annual SBC meeting in Dallas, Texas, has begun in N.C. On the other hand, it is sad that some Baptists across the SBC have begun disparaging the candidate they do not plan to vote for in Dallas. I hope N.C. Baptists will be above reproach on this matter.

I have known both of these men for a long time. Both love Jesus, love Southern Baptists, are committed to reaching the lost and are men of integrity. Both are faithful family men and effective church leaders. I don’t believe these men will be attacking each other. We should pray for them and for Southern Baptists to follow God’s will in everything we do.

I appreciate this good Facebook post by Ken Hemphill Tuesday morning:
“1. Pray that everyone in this process will have the wisdom and grace to remain focused on discovering the will of God and thus that which is best for the SBC. I believe in our congregational polity, but I don't believe it is meant to be a political process to out vote one another, but a means of discovering and doing the will of God (Acts 6:5).
2. Pray that persons who feel strongly about a certain candidate or issue will speak with respect and kindness.
3. Pray that the entire process leading up to the convention will stand as an example to the world about how Christians conduct themselves.
4. Pray that the eventual results of this and other issues raised at our annual convention meeting in June will glorify Christ, unify our convention, and advance God's kingdom.”
That’s a good word, Ken. I hope Baptists are listening.
