Discernment needed!

Returning from a meeting in Greensboro Tuesday afternoon, I listened by radio to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testify before Senate committees in Washington, D.C. As you know, people are concerned about their private information being sold or otherwise publicly available through social media. Facebook’s privacy policies and lack of standards are at the center of the discussion.

We’ve grown accustomed to putting our information “out there,” trusting it will go no farther. And sometimes we are careless to say things that should not be written or spoken in public forums. There is also concern about misinformation that is widely spread across the Internet.

Do you get those emails that aren’t sure who you are? I received an email this week that began, “Dear Joey.” I have no idea who Joey is. But I frequently receive emails that begin, “Dear Norman.” I know that database is not current. Norman is the previous editor of the Biblical Recorder. Other emails open with, “Dear Tony.” Tony was the BR editor who retired 11 years ago. I recently received one that began, “Dear R.G.” Seriously! R.G. Pucket retired from the Recorder 20 years ago. My point is this: a lot of data is sold on the open market, but like some “news” you read, it is not accurate.

Be careful! Don’t believe everything you read on social media, on the Internet or even through media outlets. In Hebrews 5:14, the Bible says, “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” I like that – “trained” to discern good and evil. Discernment is not a natural gift. It takes training. Train yourself and disciple those in your circle of believers to “discern good and evil.”

By the way, you can be sure that the Biblical Recorder has not, and does not, sell or share your email or other information with anyone! That’s our policy, and we live by it.

Thank you for supporting the Biblical Recorder!
