The big news this week is that last Sunday John Mark Harrison announced to his congregation at Apex Baptist Church that he will be preaching in view of a call at a church out of state this Sunday, October 21. He is an announced candidate for president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, so he has withdrawn his bid for the office. Michael Barrett, the retiring pastor of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church, planned to nominate Harrison. Instead, Barrett announced Monday that he will nominate Steve Scoggins
for the office of convention president. Scoggins is the widely respected pastor of First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, N.C. No other candidates have announced for the office of president.
This is an interesting twist of events. Harrison would have been a very good leader in the office. But N.C. Baptists can be equally excited about Scoggins’s leadership. Although there is an age gap between the two pastors, both respect and relate to people of all ages. Both are effectively leading their churches in Great Commission missions and effective biblical ministry. Both are pastoring churches with a strong track record of generous support for missions through the Cooperative Program. Pray for God's leadership in the election of all officers of the convention next month.
Pray for the coming annual meeting of N.C. Baptists Nov. 5-6 and the Pastor’s Conference, Nov. 4-5. Both are at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.
We rejoice for answered prayer – N.C. pastor Andrew Brunson has been released by the government of Turkey and has returned to his home! Read the story here.
Monday I met with pastors in the West Chowan Association to talk about the Recorder’s ministry. Thank you Terry Stockman, for your outstanding leadership as director of missions and associational mission strategist in this historic part of our state!
Finally, please take a moment to read some comments I shared
about my upcoming retirement in this week’s print edition of the Biblical Recorder
. Thank you for allowing the BR staff to serve on your team!
