Baptists address abuse

In the wake of last week’s troubling reports the Houston Chronicle published about sexual abuse in Southern Baptist churches, Baptist leaders continue to respond with grief and proposals to confront the problem head on. Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear addressed the convention’s executive committee Monday night in their regularly scheduled winter meeting in Nashville, Tenn. In his message, Greear identified 10 key areas we need to address sex abuse in our churches and in denominational processes. If you have not read about his message, please read it now and carefully consider his proposals.

In breaking news this week, the search committee for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s (SWBTS) next president announced their candidate Monday morning. The Biblical Recorder was one of the first outlets to post this important news. As a graduate of SWBTS, I am pleased to hear that Adam Greenway will be presented to the seminary’s trustees at a called meeting next week. The search committee had a challenging responsibility. I believe they made a wise, discerning choice. Pray for the trustees, Greenway and all of the school’s faculty as they move forward.
You will be blessed to read this story about Sam James, a retired missionary who is a heralded hero in Baptist life. He captivated the state convention’s staff a few weeks ago in his message to the group. If you really want to be blessed, read his new book, The Making of a Servant, with a forward by J.D. Greear. Don’t miss this book!!
