    One day after fire destroyed nearly half of Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Harrison, Ark., senior pastor Kennith Stacy held services in the congregation’s family life center. “In the midst of the tragedy that we find on our campus, we can still see that there’s joy because God’s presence hasn’t left,” Stacy told the congregation.

    With five wildfires burning in California, the latest in Los Angeles, Southern Baptist disaster relief volunteers are on standby and several church facilities are unreachable, ministry leaders there told Baptist Press. The Thomas fire in Ventura, the largest, is threatening churches in the Gold Coast Baptist Association that are included in mandatory evacuation zones.

    Another North Carolina congregation is grieving after a fire destroyed the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Mount Holly. The fire department attempted to access the fire origin but were pulled from the building when flames grew. The roof collapsed into the sanctuary, and crews worked to contain the fire.

    Fires at seven black churches within the past 10 days have fueled discussions of racial hatred, as the first occurred within a week of the June 17 massacre of nine black Christians by a white supremacist at a Charleston church. Arson had been confirmed in three of the fires as of July 1 but none had been deemed hate crimes.
