    Conley Smith, key Gateway supporter in Denver, dies

    Conley Smith, a Denver oil executive who was instrumental in founding the Rocky Mountain Campus of Gateway Seminary, died unexpectedly April 21. “When we get to heaven, we will be surprised who the really important people really were,” Jeff Iorg, president of the Southern Baptist seminary, said. “Conley Smith will make that list.”

    Trustees of Gateway Seminary approved selling a former regional campus site in Brea, Calif., and heard reports on the “new normal” for the seminary’s new Southern California campus during their April 16-17 meeting in Ontario. Trustees also approved a budget of $11.9 million for the coming year.

    Jonathan Edwards Center to open at Gateway in 2018

    A Jonathan Edwards Center will be established at Gateway Seminary, Jeff Iorg, the Southern Baptist entity’s president, has announced for the Los Angeles-area Ontario campus. The center, or JEC, will be affiliated with the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University in New Haven, Ct. An agreement between the two institutions was signed in October.

    William O. Crews, 81, president emeritus of Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, passed away March 1 after a brief illness. “William O. Crews was a Baptist statesman, who profoundly impacted our work in the western United States,” said Jeff Iorg, president of Gateway Seminary.
