    Hammond unanimously voted Ga. Baptist exec. director

    Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee members voted with a singular “yes” to a search team’s recommendation Tuesday (Sept. 11) that pastor Thomas Hammond become the convention’s next executive director. Hammond, 56, is lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Alpharetta and was president of the Georgia Baptist Convention from 2015-2017.

    Messengers to the 195th Georgia Baptist Convention annual meeting approved an increased Cooperative Program budget of $41,000,000 – 42 percent of which will be forwarded to Southern Baptist Convention causes. In addition, they re-elected Alpharetta pastor Thomas Hammond as president at the gathering at Calvary Baptist Temple in Savannah.

    James Griffith, former Ga. Baptist exec, dies

    James H. “Jim” Griffith, 89, executive director emeritus of the Georgia Baptist Convention, died May 7 at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City, Ga. He had been admitted to the facility the previous Wednesday in failing health. Griffith led the state convention for 11 years, from 1981-92.
