    One year later, churches affirm ‘God before Government’

    In 2015 Elizabeth Baptist Church displayed the Christian flag above the American flag to show they were ultimately accountable to God. Churches around the state continue to follow their example one year later. Gary Lucas, pastor of Bladen Union Baptist Church, brought the idea to a church meeting after reading about the movement.

    Christian flag movement defines patriotism

    A Bible-based movement began on the front lawn of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. The church raised two flags on a single, newly installed flagpole as part of a unique patriotic ceremony after the morning worship service. In a break with tradition, the Christian flag was hoisted above the American flag.

    Rit Varriale thought raising the Christian flag above the American flag at Elizabeth Baptist Church on July 5 would get the attention of people in Shelby and the surrounding North Carolina mountains. He did not expect the explosive attention that catapulted the event and the discussion of religious freedom into the national limelight.
