    Iran-Iraq earthquake called 2017’s deadliest yet

    The death toll continues to rise after the deadliest earthquake of 2017 shook the Iran-Iraq border late Nov. 12. More than 450 people have been killed and 7,000 injured in the 7.3-magnitude quake, with major aftershocks continuing to shake the region, extending into Turkey, Kuwait, Pakistan and Lebanon, according to CNN.

    Islamic State fighters surrendered en masse to Kurdish Iraqi forces in Hawija, shriveling the jihad army to perhaps a 10th of its size when it invaded Iraq in 2014, according to widespread news reports. About 1,000 jihadists surrendered over a span of three days as Iraq recaptured the Islamic State stronghold of Hawija.

    Tony Simon, a noted evangelist and pastor in Israel, was killed in a pedestrian accident in Iraq on May 29. Simon was walking back to his hotel in northern Iraq when he was struck by a motor vehicle. The Messianic leader was in Iraq to provide aid to locals in the troubled country.

    While the world’s attention has been focused on the plight of Iraq’s suffering Yazidi community, Baptist Global Response humanitarian partners have been working in other parts of the country among some 250,000 other displaced Iraqis. News outlets reported Aug. 11 that Kurdish fighters were able to rescue about 20,000 Yazidi Iraqis.
