    A woman wept as she showed off the nearly new coat sent by North Carolina Baptists. “It’s beautiful!” she said through tears. It took the promise of a warm coat to draw her into Graffiti 3 Church, a new Baptist church plant in Brownsville, a high-crime, high-poverty neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn.

    Kevin Cabe grew up in Canton, a town west of Asheville ringed by mountains that lead one to look up. Now he’s right in the middle of Manhattan ringed by skyscrapers that also lead one to look up. Cabe is helping hundreds of Baptist volunteers come to the Big Apple to help plant new churches.

    Last December, a 58-year-old man was baptized in New York City. Any baptism is cause for celebration, but this Bangladeshi man had been Muslim until he recently came to faith in Jesus Christ late last year. It was a quiet baptism, performed in a bathtub.

    Jan Vezikov and his family emigrated from Estonia to Rhode Island in 1989. A few years later his father planted a church in Rhode Island. Not long after that, Vezikov’s father began driving once a week to Boston to lead a Bible study because he also felt a burden for the people of Boston. “He prayed for a church planter,” Vezikov said.
