    As Florence lashes N.C., Baptists ‘shine bright’

    As Hurricane Florence came ashore Friday (Sept. 14) in North Carolina, Southern Baptists began relief ministries and made initial assessments of flooded church buildings and homes. The Category 1 hurricane has left at least five people dead. Florence could dump 40 inches of rain on some areas of North and South Carolina, according to media reports.

    Bob Oglesby’s dad is a pilot and his son is a commercial pilot, but it wasn’t until much later in life that Oglesby moved into the cockpit and learned to fly. He always had an interest in flying and even flew some with his dad. In 1994, when Oglesby felt like he could afford the cost of getting his pilot’s license, he turned to his son.

    North Carolina Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief responded to the devastation of a deadly tornado that hit Davidson and Randolph counties Nov. 16. Volunteers set up feeding and shower units at Liberty Baptist Church in Thomasville.
