    NOBTS year-long centennial to have evangelistic focus

    New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary kicked off its 100th anniversary celebration with special events and the announcement of upcoming centennial initiatives focused on evangelism and missions. Activities began with the annual Founders Day chapel service, as Chuck Kelley pointed past the seminary’s founding to the true “seed” from which the seminary sprang – the Acts 1:8 commission.

The “Rights and Sexuality: Where Individual Freedoms and Civil Rights Meet” event was sponsored by the Institute for Faith and the Public Square.

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson, said female SBC seminary graduates are helping to fulfill a need in churches for “strong female Bible teachers.”

    The addition of a new faculty member and several curriculum changes were approved by the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary board of trustees’ executive committee June 6. Jeff Audirsch was elected as associate professor of biblical studies in the seminary’s Leavell College.

But unlike the graduates lined up beside her, Garcia earned her degree inside prison walls. Garcia completed every class except one prior to her release in January.

    Having overcome a crisis of faith to complete her college degree, Brenda Thornton walked the chapel stage at the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women. Thornton was one of 13 graduates in the first-ever awarding of bachelor degrees at the prison by Leavell College, marking a milestone for the program that began five years ago.

    The suicide death of a beloved colleague after a sexual addiction came to light drove the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary community to their knees in prayer last August. They rose determined to help others caught in pornography and sexual addiction with a conference called “Recalibrate.”

    Missing NOBTS student found in Ala. hospital

    New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary student John Russell, missing since April 22, has been found in an Alabama hospital. He has been in the ICU at D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton, Ala., since April 22 following an accident. Russell's mother has been notified and is traveling to be with him.
