    California fires leave locals ‘shocked,’ DR active

    California Southern Baptists have found themselves dispensing hope amid the death, destruction and weariness caused by more than a dozen wildfires burning across the state. The largest recorded fire in California history – the Mendocino Complex fire in the northern part of the state – has burned more than 340,000 acres, destroyed 147 homes and left a firefighter dead Aug. 13.

    Flames were shooting through the roof of the Sunrise Children’s Services activity center at its Danville, Ky., campus when local firefighters arrived on Friday afternoon, Jan. 19. “God was watching out for us,” said Dale Suttles, president of Sunrise Children’s Services. “We were blessed that no one was in the activity center at the time.”

    A devastating Christmas Eve fire killed a North Carolina minister’s wife. Sarah Fogarty Beddingfield, 68, of Lillington, died Dec. 25 after a Christmas tree fire. Her husband, Ed Beddingfield, has been pastor at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek since 2015. The church is a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship church.

    Emergency workers responded to a two-alarm fire at Providence Baptist Church in Vale, N.C. around 2 a.m. Monday. According to local news sources, at least eight fire departments from three counties responded to the call. When fire crews arrived at the church just southwest of Hickory, they found flames and smoke coming from the building.

    A Gatlinburg, Tenn., man who lost his wife and two daughters in the wildfires that swept through the area has extended forgiveness publicly to two juveniles suspected of starting the blaze. The suspects’ arrests were announced Dec. 7. Their names and genders have not been released.
