    TRUSTEES: ERLC names Mohler, Waggoner for key awards

    Trustees of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission approved a seminary president and a courtroom advocate as recipients of the Southern Baptist entity’s 2018 awards Wednesday (Sept. 5) during their annual meeting. The ERLC board unanimously endorsed R. Albert Mohler Jr. for the Distinguished Christian Service Award and Kristen Waggoner for the Religious Liberty Award.

    More than 400 people gathered for the opening sessions of the 2018 Woman’s Missionary Union Annual Meeting and Missions Celebration on June 10 in Dallas. The 2018 theme for WMU is “Unshakable Pursuit.” The first session, themed “The Unshakable Pursuit of Fun,” was held in a casual ranch-style events center and included a barbecue dinner.

    A bill awaiting Delaware Gov. John Carney’s signature is America’s first to outlaw marriage before age 18, the latest measure in a nationwide effort to rein in child marriage. Delaware’s measure is the strictest to date. Carney is expected to sign the bill as early as this week.

    The return of a Korean War veteran’s remains to his hometown of Cambridge, Mass., 65 years after his death provided opportunity to pay tribute and for pastor Paul Kim to offer a public gospel witness. U.S. Army Cpl. Ronald Sparks was wounded in action and captured the year after he arrived in Korea.
