Ice relief efforts on hold

Disaster relief work in the western part of North Carolina

has been put on hold.

Gaylon Moss, disaster relief director for North Carolina

Baptist Men, sent out a mass e-mail today alerting workers of the halt in work

in Watauga County.

The e-mail credited with inclement weather with the work

stoppage.

There was a concern that workers would not be safe if they

continued because of the dangers of snow, ice and temperatures.

As of Jan. 2, Moss said 20 families had been helped by

approximately 50 volunteers.

When work resumes, Moss asked that chainsaw operators and

those that can clear brush volunteer.

WRAL in Raleigh was reporting that an arctic air mass is

expected to remain in place across North Carolina through the workweek.
