Messengers from North
Carolina Baptist churches will meet Nov. 8-10 at the Koury Convention Center in
Greensboro for the 180th annual meeting of the Baptist State Convention of
North Carolina (BSC).
Many will come to Greensboro
a day earlier to attend the annual Pastor’s Conference, which this year for the
first time is at the same venue as the annual meeting. It begins at 6 p.m. Nov.
7.

The Convention has abandoned
the idea of a two-year budget, so this year messengers will again consider an
annual budget proposal that is six percent smaller than the previous year; will
elect officers; consider a host of changes in the articles and bylaws to make
wording consistent and to change the way the BSC is required to inform churches
about such changes; will hear updates on evangelism efforts and partnerships
and will hear reports from the entities they support through their Cooperative
Program gifts.
One highlight is sure to be
the presentation Nov. 8 at 7:40 p.m. by Baptist Children’s Homes of North
Carolina recognizing their 125th anniversary. Any year the Children’s Homes is
given time on the program to present their gratitude, messengers declare it the
emotional highlight of the week.
Former Southern Baptist Convention
President Johnny Hunt will preach the Convention sermon at 8:20 p.m. Nov. 9.
Kevin Ezell, the new
president of the North American Mission Board, will preach at the pastor’s
conference at 1:45 p.m. Nov. 8.
Ed Yount, pastor of Woodlawn
Baptist Church in Conover, is leading this year’s session as president.
He has declared himself a
candidate for re-election, as have Mark Harris and C.J. Bordeaux for the
offices of first and second vice-presidents. Harris is pastor of First Baptist
Church, Charlotte; Bordeaux is pastor of Gorman Baptist Church, Durham.
