North Carolina Baptists gathering for this year’s Annual Meeting of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina will be encouraged and challenged to “Impact” their world for Christ.

“Impact: Compelling the Lost to Come to Life” is the theme of this year’s meeting, scheduled for Nov. 14-15 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The theme is based on Luke 14:23 which states “Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”

David Platt, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board (IMB) will deliver this year’s convention sermon during a special “Impact” worship service Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Worship that evening will be led by musicians from The Summit Church in Durham.

Messengers at this year’s meeting will also elect new convention officers, vote on a budget for 2017, receive equipping through a number of breakout sessions and learn how they can become involved in various ministry partnerships and church planting efforts.

Selected highlights of events and activities taking place at this year’s Annual Meeting are listed below.

If you are attending the annual meeting, look in your messenger packet or at the Biblical Recorder booth for a special convention issue that will hold all the information you need for the meeting. There will also be a BSC program available.

Breakouts

Attendees may select from among 23 different breakout sessions offered Tuesday afternoon from 3:15-4 p.m. and 4:15-5 p.m. that will provide practical ministry training. Sessions will cover topics such as disciple-making, church revitalization, missions and more.

Budget

Messengers will consider a proposed $30.375 million Cooperative Program budget for 2017. The proposal, which was approved by the Board of Directors at its October meeting, represents a 2.9 percent increase over the 2016 budget. The proposed budget also recommends a 40.5 percent allocation to missions and ministries of the Southern Baptist Convention, which represents a half-percent increase over last year.

Bylaw changes

Four bylaw changes will be presented to messengers for consideration. The changes would allow greater flexibility in scheduling regular meetings of the Board of Directors; eliminate limitations placed on employees from the five affiliated universities from serving in various convention leadership positions; clarify the roles of individuals elected to the Committee on Convention meetings during Annual Meeting; and update portions of the bylaws for correction and clarity.

Church planting interviews

Pastors from across the state working in a variety of ministry contexts will participate in a series of 20-minute informational interviews at the church planting booth in the Guilford exhibit hall. Interviews will take place Monday, Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Elections

Messengers will elect new convention officers for 2017, which include the offices of president, first vice president and second vice president.

The election for convention president is scheduled for the Tuesday morning session, and the elections for first and second vice president will take place Tuesday afternoon.

Exhibits

Exhibit halls will be located in both the Guilford and Imperial ballrooms on the first floor of the Koury Convention Center. The exhibit halls will feature booths and representatives from the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, as well as other ministries and organizations.

Ministers’ wives conference

Dorothy Patterson, professor of the theology in women’s studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and wife of Paige Patterson, will share encouragement at this year’s ministers’ wives conference. The conference is scheduled for Nov. 14 from 9-11:45 a.m.

Partnership opportunities

Messengers may also learn about numerous ministry partnership opportunities available through the convention’s Office of Great Commission Partnerships. Complimentary breakfast, brunch, lunch and coffee break events are planned to share information on partnerships in places like Baltimore, Boston, New York City and Toronto. Learn more and register for these events by visiting ncannualmeeting.org/events.

Prayer

A dedicated prayer room will be located in the Cardinal Room at the Koury Center, along with a prayer booth in the convention center lobby. Messengers may also register to participate in the “Pray Greensboro” bus vision tour on Tuesday from 3:15-5 p.m. Learn more about the vision tour at ncannualmeeting.org/praygreensboro.

Resolutions

A resolution of appreciation for Wake Forest University’s Z. Smith Reynolds Library will be presented to messengers. The library houses the largest collection of historical information related to the work and ministry of N.C. Baptist churches and associations covering a span of 250 years.

Speakers

In addition to David Platt delivering the convention sermon during the Tuesday evening session, convention President Timmy Blair will bring the annual president’s address Monday night, and Milton A. Hollifield Jr., BSC executive director-treasurer will share a strategy update with messengers on Tuesday morning.
