Tom Bland was a soft-spoken, gentle man, father, husband, grandfather, professor, and so much more. No one will ever know how many people were led to Christ or who were challenged to grow in their faith, because of his influence and his teaching. We met Tom and Eunice through the Raleigh Baptist Association WMU as they welcomed some of our team members into their home, where we would collate a quarterly newsletter. Our families became friends. When our son was born on Tom's 65th birthday, we joked that they were twins. Our friendship grew and we have been blessed by this friendship with Eunice and Tom.

His Memorial Service was a time for joy and gratitude as we celebrated Tom's life. We heard stories of Dr. Bland taking students to New York City and Washington DC as he trained them for urban ministries. We celebrated his passion for telling others about Jesus and for a faith so strong that even Alzheimer's could not take it away. We thank God for the friendship, compassion, influence and ministry of Dr. Tom Bland.

Dr. Bland was one of my favorite Professors at SEBTS--and a good friend / godly man / deep follower of Christ in his daily walk. We will miss him, but rejoice in a certain reunion on "higher ground."

Anyone claiming SEBTS was "liberal" would never find an example in anything Dr. Bland ever said in the classroom. Although we never discussed it, I think his take on all the political stuff of Conservative Resurgence would be a simple word: "Bullgeshitka."

My love and sympathies to his son, Tom, a genuine minister of the Gospel and good friend in the N. Roanoke Association where he pastored Sharpsburg Baptist before going to the mountains. I will do my best to be there today at 11:00 to remember him with friends and family.

Dr. Bland---say "hello" to my father as you both enjoy your heavenly reward after walking like Christ before my eyes.
