Calvary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem plans to host a launch event Oct. 23 for Trail Life USA.

Rob Green, interim executive director of Trail Life USA, will be the guest speaker along with Calvary’s troop leader, Guy Wentink. This is the first launch event for the new program in North Carolina. The event is open to the local community, as well as individuals and families interested in the Trail Life USA program from across the state.

Trail Life USA is a Christian adventure, character, and leadership program for young men in grades K-12. According to a statement from Trail Life, the program focuses on outdoor experiences that help young men grow on a personal and spiritual level and as a role model and leader.

After nearly 60 years of sponsoring a Boy Scout troop, Calvary Baptist Church announced in August that it would be ending its relationship with Boy Scouts of America (BSA), effective Dec. 31, 2013. The announcement came after the BSA voted in May to adopt new membership guidelines that allow youth who are openly homosexual into its organization.

“Calvary Baptist Church is extremely excited about our new opportunity to continue in the character development of young men,” Pastor Rob Peters said. “We have had a strong history of influence, and we look forward to continuing our ministry to boys under a new charter. My hope is for the Winston-Salem community to welcome Trail Life USA and join with us in vesting in the next generation of young leaders.”

The event will be held at Calvary Baptist Church's James B. Sechrist building. The event begins at 4 p.m. and will feature Trail Life USA program displays, outdoor displays, campfire, press table and more. Dinner ($5) will be served at 5 p.m. and will be sponsored by Chick-fil-A. The event concludes at 6:15 p.m.
