Ed Yount, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover for 16 years, will be nominated as first vice president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina during the 178th annual session Nov. 10-12 in Greensboro.

Current Second Vice President Phil Ortego, pastor of Scotts Hill Baptist Church in Wilmington, and First Vice President Leland Kerr, pastor of Eastside Baptist Church in Shelby are both eligible for second one-year terms but have opted not to run.

Yount, chair of the Giving Plans Study Committee which is to report at that meeting, said he was approached by “a group of pastors” about running because of his involvement and leadership in Convention life. He does not know who will nominate him.

“They said they felt I could make a good contribution to Convention work and help maintain a focus on missions and evangelism,” said Yount, 53.

Yount is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhine College and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. His doctor of ministry degree is from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He has served on the BSC Board of Directors and its Executive Committee and on the BSC Resolutions Committee. He was moderator of Catawba Valley Baptist Association for two terms and has been a trustee of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board and of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute.

Woodlawn, with 2,000 members, reported $ 1,451,875 in undesignated receipts in 2007. It reported giving $143,837 to missions through the Cooperative Program and almost $36,000 in state and national special missions offerings.

Kerr has just moved to Eastside from Wilmington, where he was director of missions.

With the responsibilities of both Scotts Hill and of BSC office, Ortego said he felt he would not do justice to either.

"I decided I would bow out," he said.

Although he declared no aspirations for any other office, Ortego said, “It's been a great joy to be part of the process.”
