    W.C. Fields, SBC public relations pioneer, dies at 96

    W.C. Fields, a forerunner in denominational journalism as vice president for public relations for the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) Executive Committee from 1959-1987, died Dec. 3 in Nashville at age 96. As an Executive Committee vice president, Fields was the SBC’s press representative and director of Baptist Press, the convention’s news service.

    Online hotel registration for the Southern Baptist Convention’s 2019 annual meeting in Birmingham, Ala., opened Oct. 12 at 8 a.m. Four minutes later, all the rooms designated for the event at on-site hotels were full. The rooms disappeared so fast that it left some Southern Baptists scratching their heads.

    A Texas court has dismissed several defendants and multiple counts in a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by retired Texas state district judge Paul Pressler. The lawsuit filed by plaintiff Gerald Duane Rollins in October 2017 alleged sexual misconduct by Pressler and also sought to hold several other defendants responsible, including the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).

    Dave Miller ‘on the recovery trail’ after cancer surgery

    Iowa pastor Dave Miller, president of last year’s Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference, has reported he is “on the recovery trail” after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on his kidney June 26. Miller, senior pastor of Southern Hills Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa, underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder and spleen on May 3, when the tumor was discovered.

    Charles Fuller, SBC Peace Committee chair, dies

    Charles Fuller, a Virginia pastor who chaired the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) Peace Committee, died July 28 in Roanoke, Va. He was 86. Formed in 1985 in response to a motion at the SBC annual meeting, the Peace Committee was charged to “seek to determine the sources” of controversy amid the convention’s Conservative Resurgence and “make findings and recommendations.”
