  • How do we handle criticism?

April 17 2017 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Sometimes it helps to state the obvious. So, here goes my opening line. Churches are filled with humans. In other words, there is no chance for perfection in any church – zero chance! There is no perfect church. We’ve said that so many times it has become a cliché.

  • Pence-Graham rule causes media frenzy

April 4 2017 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

The media reported that Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch may make it through the confirmation process in the Senate. At the same time, headlines told us the repeal of Obamacare was disastrously dead. On international fronts, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly interfered in last year’s president election in the United States and the insane leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, is ready to take on the whole world with his nuclear weapons.

  • What does March Madness have to do with the gospel?

March 7 2017 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Anyone who is remotely familiar with college basketball knows that March Madness is not a movie about anger management. Neither is it the latest novel about a crazy scientist. It is a colloquial phrase for the series of collegiate basketball games during the month of March that will conclude with crowning a national championship team on April 3.

  • HB2: Here we go again

February 20 2017 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Five years ago, North Carolinians were embroiled in a battle over an amendment to the state constitution that defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman. When all votes were counted from the May 8, 2012, referendum on the amendment, citizens voted overwhelmingly to support traditional marriage – 61 percent in favor, 39 percent against the amendment.

  • Rescue us from darkness

January 24 2017 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Matthew’s Gospel tells us that immediately after the temptation of Jesus, He began His public ministry quoting Isaiah 9:2, saying, “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death, Light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).

  • Defund Planned Parenthood now

Jan. 22 is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The day gives pause for all Americans to reflect on more than 50 million lives lost and countless others damaged by the national license to conveniently destroy human life at will.   From the more positive perspective, followers of Jesus Christ use the day to honor the gift of life because it is the unique creation of God.

  • Most read editorials of 2016

December 27 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

The year 2016 was a crazy and often confusing year of social rebellion, moral deviation, political abnormality and spiritual conflict. Wow! I’m glad that one is over.   I don’t believe I need to regularly address every issue of the day, especially when the Biblical Recorder publishes so many articles and commentaries from people who are much better qualified to address contemporary matters of interest.

  • ‘Unto us’

    December 12 2016 by K. Allan Blume | with 0 comments

I’ve sometimes wondered what Isaiah and those who read his prophecy were thinking when they heard this great text the Holy Spirit gave to the prophet.   “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.

  • IMB reset is working

November 29 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Getting Baptists to agree on mission priorities is like the proverbial task of making sausage. Everyone wants their favorite ingredients in the mix, and by the time it's finished, we don’t necessarily want to know what’s in it. We just hope everyone will find it agreeable when the work is done.

  • The Trump shock

November 14 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

The election of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States has been called a shock wave, seismic tremor, social tsunami – and many other adjectives that describe radical surprise.   There has been an abundance of analysis and over-analysis about the election results since Tues.

  • Where is the media’s integrity?

October 31 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the seismic cultural change that has swept over the United States of America. Through a recent nationwide survey, The Barna Group confirms that the nation’s values have declined dramatically. A majority of Americans reject God’s authority in their lives and embrace values that are contrary to the Bible including sex outside of marriage, homosexual relationships, same-sex marriage and doctor-assisted suicide.

  • The best among the worst

October 17 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

In conversations with Baptist leaders in central and eastern North Carolina, I have been deeply moved by the devastation Hurricane Matthew unloaded on the people of our state. I’ve also heard many personal stories of hope and triumph that emerged after the destructive rain and wind move out.

  • Acts 1:8 gives no percentages

October 3 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to the early disciples and gave them an assignment that still belongs to all followers of our Lord in every generation, until He comes again. So, we are still working on Acts 1:8. Jesus framed His Great Commission with these words, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8, NKJV).

  • As it was in the days of Noah

September 19 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

These sobering words from the lips of Jesus deserve our attention.   “For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be” Matthew 24:37-39, NASB.

  • Appreciation is in order

September 6 2016 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

The Biblical Recorder gives a special word of appreciation to all North Carolina Baptist churches that have a group subscription plan with us. These churches are consistently providing their members with information that has a biblical worldview focusing on the Great Commission and seeking to glorify God.
