  • Is my church comfortable?

January 28 2014 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Wait a minute! Is that the question we should be asking? Where in scripture are believers promised to be a fellowship of comfort and ease? When did the Christian movement experience the shift away from a life of sacrifice? When did we begin to spend so much time arguing over the temperature of the auditorium or the amount of padding in the seats?   Recently Tom Elliff, president of the International Mission Board (IMB), was speaking during a missions conference at Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City.

  • 41 years and counting

The biblical view of the sanctity of human life is not vague. God’s crowning achievement in creation is human life. It is unique and valuable. Life has such immeasurable value that God issued many commands to protect it.   In this edition and the previous edition of the Biblical Recorder, we have included articles that are calling attention to the 41st anniversary of the Roe v.

  • Can we reverse giving trends?

December 30 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 1 comments

I learned the value of tithing and giving very early in my Christian life. My dad was an alcoholic. He had lost his job and was deep in debt due to his alcohol problem. When I was 10 years old, I saw my father give his life to Christ and abandon alcohol forever.

An abundance of rich words can be used to describe the God of the Bible. One can draw on the beauty of words like holy, faithful, loving, merciful, patient and many more, including words that represent His extravagant grace.     God’s character defines radical generosity.

  • Too big for us!

December 2 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Taking the gospel to the whole world is a big assignment – too big for all International Mission Board (IMB) missionaries together. We’ll need serious multiplication – not addition – of this current mission force just to make a dent in the task of proclaiming Christ to the world.

  • Be thankful!

November 18 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

I am thankful. I know there is much in the world to be grieved about. We feel the burden of our nation’s ungodly debt, failed leadership, and unprecedented spiritual darkness. International calamity and vast lostness grieve our souls.   The apostle Paul itemized these concerns and many others in the third chapter of Colossians, where he described the perspective of the believer in Christ.

  • One milestone, three pastors

October 21 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

Milestones are defined as significant historical markers in the life of an individual, organization or nation. They are points that should cause us to pause, recognize, celebrate and give thanks – such as a church’s 100-year anniversary, the celebration of a pastor’s long term of service and other meaningful accomplishments in Kingdom work.

  • At the same church for 58 years

October 7 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 1 comments

In recognition of Pastor Appreciation Month, I am sharing some personal comments about pastors who faithfully serve our churches. Baptist pastors in North Carolina are a very diverse lot. Many carry labels like “old fashioned,” “contemporary,” “Calvinist,” “traditional,” “evangelical,” and “purpose driven.

When I met with the Biblical Recorder’s Editor Search Committee for my first candidate interview in March 2011, one on the committee asked me this question, “What is your vision for the Biblical Recorder?” I quickly responded, “I don’t have one.

The Biblical Recorder has been published for 180 years. While the appearance has changed dramatically, it is still printed on paper and mailed to subscribers. We hope it will be available in print form for many years to come. The choices of North Carolina Baptists and market trends will determine our future course.

  • Reactions to the Supreme Court

July 1 2013 by K. Allan Blume, BR Editor | with 0 comments

There is a lot of disappointment among Bible-believing people across America as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision on the national Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) law and on California’s Proposition 8. Both measures have been under constant attack by those who want to redefine the moral standards of the country, leaving behind the biblical values that made us strong.

One of the most famous speeches of the revolutionary war was delivered in a packed church building. The windows were wide open to allow those gathered outside the church to hear. On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry spoke the famous words, “Give me liberty or give me death,” to colonial delegates and concerned citizens gathered at St.
