We are His children, and our Heavenly Father cares for His children as He loves, protects and provides.
In Isaiah 9:6 we see Jesus called the Prince of Peace. In our world today, with all the strife and continued acts of hatred and violence, how we desperately need peace that passes all understanding; peace that only comes in knowing Jesus.

When Kimani was 12 years old he weighed 32 pounds and wore size three in toddler clothes. Throughout his childhood he was physically abused and often did not have food to eat. He had never attended school or learned how to do things like other children, such as riding a bike.

It is hard to believe that our annual meeting is coming up in just a few weeks. For many months now our program committee has diligently worked to make all the necessary preparations for our time in Greensboro.   The program committee, which is comprised of North Carolina Baptists from across the state, also spent a significant amount of time in prayer and discussion about the theme for this year’s meeting.

  • Show appreciation for your pastor

I grew up in western North Carolina as the son of a pastor, and although I pursued some other vocations, I later sensed God’s call to change my plans and soon found myself following in my father’s footsteps. I was blessed to serve as pastor of churches in Texas and North Carolina.

  • Thankful for North Carolina Baptist associations

Our state convention was founded in 1830 because North Carolina Baptists believed that more could be accomplished for God’s Kingdom by working together. Churches believed in the value of cooperation – a principle that we as Southern Baptists still very much believe in today.

As we come to the end of August, and I reflect on the missions and ministry efforts our Convention staff and churches have participated in this summer, I realize we have all been very busy! For example, this summer middle and high school students, as well as their leaders, served in various mission projects across the state through Deep Impact, which is a weeklong camp that provides youth a hands-on missions experience in unique contexts.

An article was recently published in the Biblical Recorder (July 20 issue) and on our Convention website about the first Pakistani church plant in North Carolina. This is a testimony to God's power and grace, as He has brought a man all the way from Pakistan to help North Carolina Baptists reach Pakistani Muslims with the gospel.

Last month I came across a New York Times article in which the author described her experience caring for a grandparent with Alzheimer’s. The author shared that although providing care was difficult, her parents raised her to value family. I enjoyed reading the author’s childhood memories of visits with grandparents, family dinners and family vacations.

I recently had the blessing of attending the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) meeting in Houston, Texas. I always look forward to this time each year when Southern Baptists are encouraged through wonderful ministry reports, testimonies of God at work and powerful sermons from God’s Word.

Our nation’s capital, Washington, D. C. , is home to many monuments and memorials that help us honor and remember those brave Americans throughout our history who fought for the freedoms we now enjoy in these United States.   If you have visited the 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site in New York City, you know this is also an important place.

About a week ago, members of our staff returned from a Southeast Asia vision tour. They met with International Mission Board missionaries and spent time in villages with local believers. They also explored opportunities for North Carolina Baptists to engage this area of the world with the gospel, which is home to more than 340 unreached, unengaged people groups.

Some college students spend the summer break enjoying a little down time after working hard all year to meet the grueling demands of the academic school year, and they certainly deserve this time off during the summer.   However, students participating in the Baptist State Convention’s summer missions program will use their summer for something special as they share the gospel locally, nationally and around the world.

About two years ago the Barna Group released a research study that concluded only about four percent of Americans tithe. To know that only such a small percentage of believers tithe not only disappoints my heart, but also greatly concerns me.   Our Lord provides us with financial resources so that we may better serve and glorify Him.

When their daughter Kenzie was just three weeks old, Eddie and Tracy Martin learned that she had a rare form of Down Syndrome. On that same day, the Martins were told their daughter needed heart surgery, and she needed it immediately.   I can only imagine the worry and sleepless nights these parents must have experienced.
