Doing more together through the Cooperative Program
August 27 2012 by Milton A. Hollfield Jr., BSC executive director-treasurer

As believers in Jesus Christ we are responsible for fulfilling the Great Commission. Our Lord commanded us to take the gospel to those who do not know Him and to make disciples.
We cannot accomplish this task on our own. God ordained the local church to be the instrument in which believers join together to do the work of the Kingdom.
As Baptists, we place a very high value on cooperation. This is why we have local associations throughout our state, and why more than 4,300 churches are part of our state Convention. God never intended us to live the Christian life and to be on mission for Him without the support of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
One of the primary ways we work together as Baptists is through a giving system known as the Cooperative Program. Our Cooperative Program consultant, Mike Creswell, tells churches that they don’t give to the Cooperative Program, they give through it.
He’s right; your faithful and sacrificial giving helps support ministries and missions locally and globally. Your giving helps make possible statewide efforts such as church planting, evangelism and discipleship training, collegiate and youth ministry, and multicultural ministry. Your giving helps support our Baptist Children’s Homes and N.C. Baptist Hospital.
The Cooperative Program also supports our North American partnerships in Boston, New York City and Toronto. Through the Cooperative Program you have a part in the ministry of our North American Mission Board and International Mission Board missionaries. You also help make it possible for the next generation of leaders to be equipped for service, as the Cooperative Program provides financial assistance to students attending one of our six Southern Baptist Convention seminaries.
Although many of you are still experiencing difficult financial situations because of our nation’s struggling economy, your churches still continue to give faithfully. I thank God for the way you demonstrate your love for Him through your sacrificial giving.
I assure you that God is using your gifts in powerful ways. Throughout the past few months Mike Creswell has been writing a series of articles about how North Carolina Baptist churches are making a difference by giving through the Cooperative Program. I encourage you to read these articles; you will be inspired to see how God is at work.
You are probably aware by now – and the special [nc baptist] connect insert in this issue of the Biblical Recorder has more information – that the theme for this year’s state Convention annual meeting is “Awaken.” We pray God uses our time in Greensboro as a time of spiritual awakening and revival.
As we pray toward revival and seek to do more than we ever have before to impact lostness in this world, your Cooperative Program giving is invaluable. We cannot help equip churches to send out laborers into God’s harvest fields without your support.
