Clean water for India
May 17 2010 by Milton A. Hollifield Jr., BSC Executive Director-Treasurer

It’s amazing what we take for granted. Even during this hard economic time, I doubt many of us have had to go without something like running water. Yet, in many parts of the world, running water is not the issue — they don’t even have clean water.

Take Bihar, India, for example. Of the 85 million people living in more than 45,000 villages of Bihar, most do not have access to clean water.

Most of the sickness in Bihar is a result of water-born diseases. Bihar is the poorest state in India and nearly half the population is illiterate.

About 80 percent of the population is Hindu, with less than 0.5 percent claiming the name of Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior.

Many of you are aware of the work being done by North Carolina Baptists in Bihar. N.C. Baptist Men are partnering with Biju Thomas, founder of the Transformation India Movement (TIM), to get the gospel to where it has never been before. Through TIM, Biju started a training school for church planters, an orphanage for at-risk children and a sewing school for women.

He has a great burden to reach his nation with the gospel.

As you plan for summer mission trips and even mission trips later this year, I want to remind you that our international partnerships, such as Bihar, are a great way to get involved. Biju joined us in early April in Charlotte for the N.C. Baptist Missions Conference and shared about how you are making a difference in India.

North Carolina Baptists have provided 460 new wells in Bihar.

Each of these new wells is dedicated with a Christian service and Scripture is written on the well that speaks of Jesus as the only One who can give living water.

North Carolina Baptists are adopting villages in Bihar, and so far you have adopted 80 villages.

By adopting a village you provide a clean drinking well, hymnals, Bibles, literacy help and a one-time medical clinic.

When we provide a well for clean drinking water, it is not uncommon to see a new church planted in an area near the well.

North Carolina Baptists have also helped sponsor 24 church planters in Bihar. TIM uses the funds you give to train church planters, and then assigns them to different villages in which to focus their work.

In a place of spiritual darkness, God is at work. God is changing lives and God is bringing salvation to people in Bihar.

You can watch videos or read articles about the ministry in Bihar, but I challenge you to get involved, whether by giving, by going, or by doing both. The BSC and N.C. Baptist Men want to help you be on mission and see firsthand what God is doing among the nations. To learn more, visit
