Messenger reflects on SBC annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio

June 22 2015 by Heath Lloyd, Reidsville, N.C.

Having recently returned from the Southern Baptist Convention, June 16-17, in Columbus, Ohio, I just wanted to express how thankful I am to be a Southern Baptist. No, our convention is not perfect; it is filled with imperfect people. However, the spirit at the convention this year was remarkable. I have been attending the annual meeting since I was a 10-year-old child – 1980 in Los Angeles, Calif., – and never been to one like the one this year.
The call to prayer for revival and spiritual awakening on June 16 was real, tremendous and needed. We should have been doing this 40 years ago. This was not business as usual at the Southern Baptist Convention; we’re living in desperate times. The joint North American Mission Board and International Mission Board commissioning service on June 17 will go down as a highlight in my Christian life. Laying hands on a missionary called to Asia, and praying for him as he goes forth, was powerful.
The preaching, the singing, and even the reports were good. It is encouraging in this day and age of moral confusion and compromise to be part of a denomination that knows where it stands – on the truth of God's Word, yet reaching out in love to the lost and perishing with the Good News of Jesus. I express deep appreciation to Ronnie Floyd and the team that planned our time together.
