My life has changed

By Tony W. Cartledge BR Editor

Our son Samuel is an inveterate "Legomaniac," fully enamored with those little plastic Lego blocks in scores of shapes and a dozen or more colors. Our house is home to, oh, about a million of them.

When put together into trucks and houses, space ships and trains, Legos take up a substantial amount of space. When taken apart, they take over the house.

Samuel is a boy, which means he'd rather take them apart than leave them together.

Jan and I are adults, which means we'd rather have them not only put together, but put up in his room.

But when the weather is too cold to play outside, he'll bring them down, one at the time, insisting that he needs to build a "Lego city."

Soon, the floor is covered. And the coffee table. And the couch. The inability of others to walk or sit down does not register with Samuel as a priority concern.

In time, Jan or I inevitably lay down the law to pick up the Legos. As the prime mess-maker, we expect Samuel to help sort out the pieces and ferry everything back upstairs.

During one such episode, the six-year-old engineer took a deep breath and observed, "My life has changed."

Wondering what had sparked his ominous observation, I asked what change had taken place.

"Because I used to just play," he said. "Now I have to clean up."

We assured him there would be many changes yet to come.

As we grow, learning to be responsible for our own messes and learning to consider the impact our actions have on others are both crucial lessons for life.

Some of us tend to be stubborn and have to keep learning those lessons again and again.

Sadly, some people never learn.

Jesus put the same message in a quotation from Lev. 19:18, five words we can easily understand, even if we find them hard to obey.

"Love your neighbor as yourself."
