How's your heart

By Tony W. Cartledge BR Editor

I suspect I am not the only person who suffered from media overload when every newscast detailed the latest chapter in young Jessica Santillan's struggle for life. Santillan, a Mexican native whose parents brought her to America in search of hope and help, suffered through a long illness that culminated with two rare heart and lung transplants, neither of which could save her life.

The technology to perform heart transplants has been available for years, but they remain uncommon because a heart transplant cannot take place unless someone else dies - someone who has previously indicated their willingness to be an organ donor; someone whose heart is still in good shape; someone whose heart is just the right size and blood type.

Young Jessica's first transplant failed because of a tragic failure to double-check and make sure it was a good match.

It wasn't.

I thought I couldn't bear reading one more story about the sad situation until I ran across pastor Steve Bolton's March 7 column in the Oxford Baptist Church newsletter.

Bolton pointed out the errors leading to Jessica's death show that "even the best of the best of us make mistakes, neglect the obvious and ultimately fail."

The Lenten season, Bolton noted, reminds us that we are dust, that we have failed, that our own efforts leave us without hope in this world.

But in Christ, Bolton said, we have a heart donor who is the perfect match for us, who is willing to die in order that we might live.

As Ezekiel prophesied, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you ..." (Ezek. 36:26).

In our weakness, in our despair, God offers to us a new heart, a new hope and a new life.

That's news I never tire of hearing - good news for all people, good news for all seasons, good news from a good God.
