Certification program available for ministers to preschoolers, children

From contributed reports

In 1999, the Baptist State Convention (BSC) joined with Campbell University Divinity School to create a certification program for divinity students and church leaders called to minister to preschoolers and children. Janice Haywood, BSC preschool and children ministry team leader led in developing the program and serves as program director.

Sandra Montague, minister of children and families at First Baptist Church in Charlotte credits expansion of the church's children's ministry to her participation in the program.

Montague, a certification graduate, used one of the six courses, a practicum, to craft a scripture-based children's ministry to reach children in nearby multi-housing projects as well as those within the church. The ministry is known as 2:52 Kid's Club.

The program consists of five courses and the practicum. More than 180 classroom hours of instruction are involved, which students can use as 12 credit hours at Campbell. The program is available at Campbell and through 10 intensive-study weekends at a central location in the state.

Haywood said students learn:

  • Effective faith-development teaching skills in working with preschoolers and children;
  • What appropriate biblical concepts to teach to preschoolers and children;
  • How to design programming and ministries for preschoolers and children that are appropriate for each church setting and vision;
  • How to administer a preschool and children's ministry, including volunteer enlistment, budgeting, crisis ministry, safety and security, and;
  • Skills for equipping and encouraging parents of children and preschoolers.
  • Tuition for N.C. Baptists runs about $1,200 after scholarships from the convention are credited.

    In addition to the certification process, Haywood said other services offered by the preschool/children team include:
  • "Protecting Our Church and Children," a safety and security resource available either as a download at www.bscnc.org or in hard copy from the team staff.
  • Consultations with churches that have full-day childcare centers, half-day preschools, and before and after school care.
  • Preschool and children's ministry consultations that focus on children's worship, space and environment evaluations, teaching improvement and administrative concerns.
  • For more information call the preschool/children team at (800) 395-5102, extension 431.
