Big numbers

By Tony W. Cartledge BR Editor A moment to brag, please: the Biblical Recorder set yet another record in Internet readership during September. Our Web site chalked up an amazing 221,003 "hits" for the month, at a rate of up to 9,822 per hour. That amounts to 178,807 distinct files and 79,420 page views. On average, Web-based readers across North Carolina and around the world averaged reading 2,647 pages of the online Biblical Recorder every day.

Most readers come to our site for the news and opinion articles, but the updated calendar page is also very popular, as are the classified ads and archives.

The upside of this news is that we are doing an increasingly effective job of providing N.C. Baptists with relevant news, opinion and resources in a timely and effective manner. Anyone with access to the Internet also has access to the Biblical Recorder.

That is great news, but also reflects the down side of the Web site's popularity: many readers have come to rely entirely on the online Recorder and don't subscribe to the print version. Thus we find ourselves spending more to support and improve our Web site even as our subscription income is reduced. We have more readers but less money.

There are good reasons to read the Recorder online: it's free, it's convenient, and it's available several days before the print version arrives.

But there are good reasons for subscribing to the print version, too. Pictures, for one thing. We keep the Web site lean for fast downloads, which means there are few pictures, and pictures often tell the story better than words.

There is also news in the print version that is not on the Web site, including most news items about local churches.

There's even something to be said for advertising: our printed pages describe many conference opportunities and helpful products that are not found online.

We're delighted that so many people are reading the Recorder online.

Just remember that you haven't really read a newspaper unless you get a little ink on your fingers.
