The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina’s nine-member search team is “getting closer” to identifying a candidate to recommend as the next executive director-treasurer.
Committee chairman Noah Crowe told the Biblical Recorder in a phone interview that the group is narrowing down the list of potential candidates and “prayerfully” discussing each one. The search team last met Nov. 9 at Caraway Conference Center near Asheboro, N.C.
“It is very challenging when you have the quality of candidates that have been recommended,” said Crowe, pastor at Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church in Murphy. He said the team is “committed to making sure we get the leader that’s not just best for the job but the one the Holy Spirit leads us to.”
The Recorder asked for feedback on potential topics of discussion with Crowe through its “BR Connect” text messaging service in advance of the call.
Subscriber responses touched on the next leader’s ability to oversee convention operations in a digital age and willingness to make organizational changes, if needed, that ensure Cooperative Program dollars are spent on the state convention’s highest priorities.
When asked about those topics, Crowe acknowledged they were important considerations for the committee.
Crowe said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for a “visionary who understands how to use technology as well as social media and other means to connect with people.”
He also described the next leader as someone who is not only “committed to the vibrancy of the Cooperative Program” but also to its “vitality in the next generation.”
The search team’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 23 via video conference. Crowe asked North Carolina Baptists to pray the search team has “wisdom for safety precautions” as they plan in-person interviews with top candidates amid the ongoing spread of COVID-19.
