The Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Commission has a bulletin insert for churches that will observe Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, Jan. 16. The insert and other resources are available at the special page on the ERLC website.

The insert focuses on the Psalm 139 Project, an initiative designed to make people aware of the life-saving potential of ultrasound technology and to provide pregnancy centers with ultrasound equipment and training as they minister to abortion-vulnerable women. The Project seeks to appeal to consciences by explaining the imago Dei, which gives inherent worth to every preborn child. Since the inception of the Psalm 139 Project, ERLC has placed 30 machines in the United States and abroad and are already well on their way to reaching their goal of placing 50 ultrasound machines by January 2023.

The International Mission Board has announced the availability of stories, videos and promotional resources for George Liele Church Planting, Evangelism and Missions Sunday, Feb. 6. These materials can be found at imb.org/george-liele/.

Southern Baptists set aside the first Sunday in February to celebrate the work and leadership of Black and African American Southern Baptist missionaries and to recognize the legacy of George Liele. 

Liele is one of the most significant figures in the history of Christian missions. While William Carey is recognized as the father of the modern missionary movement, that designation also belongs to George Liele. He was a freed Georgia slave who came to Christ in 1773, at the age of 23. In 1782, he and his family left the United States to share the gospel in Jamaica, a full 10 years before Carey left England.
