The deadline to submit resolutions for consideration by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina’s Committee on Resolutions and Memorials is quickly approaching.
In accordance with state convention bylaws, proposed resolutions must be submitted to the committee in writing no later than Sept. 10 prior to the annual meeting at which the resolution would be considered. A resolution has been traditionally defined as an expression of sentiment, opinion or concerns of a voting body, as compared to a motion, which calls for a specific action.
“Resolutions allow the churches of our convention to speak with a collective voice regarding important theological doctrines or culturally significant issues,” said resolutions committee chairman Lance Cole, pastor of Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church in Ruffin, N.C. “Throughout our history, Baptists have used these resolutions to help unify our churches for the sake of the gospel. The resolutions committee will consider and pray over all resolutions submitted for adoption by the convention at our annual meeting in November.”
The Committee on Resolutions and Memorials reviews all properly submitted resolutions and presents all appropriate resolutions to the convention for its consideration during the annual meeting. State convention bylaws authorize the committee to reword resolutions for clarity, combine similar resolutions into one resolution, or reject resolutions that have been previously addressed or those that are inappropriate.
The committee is directed by state convention bylaws to notify individuals submitting resolutions of its decision no later than Sept. 30.
Messengers whose resolutions are rejected by the committee may seek to present the resolution for consideration by messengers at a convention meeting provided that certain requirements are met as outlined in the state convention bylaws.
Proposed resolutions are preferred to be received by mail addressed to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, ATTN: Gabe Magan, 205 Convention Drive, Cary, NC 27511. They may also be sent by email to [email protected].
