On the northeast bank of the Perquimans River in Hertford, N.C., sits a 100-acre plot of land called Cale Retreat and Conference Center.

Cale, which is owned by the Chowan Baptist Association (CBA), recently reached a milestone as it paid off its debt toward a 9,200-square-foot conference center that was built two years ago.

Matt Thomas, director of Cale, said CBA raised funds to pay for most of the $900,000 facility. The association took out a loan for the remaining amount from North Carolina Baptist Financial Services, part of the North Carolina Baptist Foundation (NCBF).

In a recent executive meeting the association decided to retire the remaining $40,000 of its debt. It currently holds no debt on the facility, freeing the association to focus its attention on plans for new construction.

Camp Cale retired its debt on the 9,200 square-foot conference center. The camp now focuses attention on new construction.

“Camp Cale is expanding,” said Thomas. “We’re transitioning from a rustic to a more modern site, while remaining a traditional summer camp.” The next part of that expansion includes two 40-bed bunkhouses.

The new conference center, along with the planned bunkhouses, will allow Cale to better serve its many guests that travel to Hertford every year.

Cale hosts overnight summer camps in June and July for both kids and teens. The theme for the summer of 2015 is “More than a Hero.”

According to Thomas, campers will learn that Jesus is more than a hero – He is God’s Son. The 2015 teen summer camps will feature for the first time two nationally known speakers, Alex McFarland and Jason Jimenez.

A specialty camp for sailing and shooting sports is also available for the first time. Activities at Cale include high and low ropes courses, a rock wall, archery and rifle ranges, basketball and volleyball courts. There are water activities too, like canoeing, kayaking and sailing. The camp will soon boast an 18-hole disc golf course as well.

Camp Cale is not only a summer camp for children; they also host churches and adult groups throughout the year.

Men’s, women’s, college and various other groups are welcome to rent the facilities for retreats and other events.

There are many activities to enjoy at Cale, but the focus is threefold: share Christ, develop faith and build community.

“If we’re not doing those three things,” said Thomas, “we don’t need to exist.”
