PALMETTO, Fla. (BP) — A now-former pastor arrested on June 21 for possessing images of child sexual abuse received 14 additional charges from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office on June 25.
A dozen of the new charges for Jonathan Elwing, 43, are listed under the state statute for sexual performance of a child and include six counts of using or allowing a child to engage in sex acts and six counts of intentionally possess, controlling, or intentionally viewing media that includes child pornography.
Two sexual battery charges committed against a person less than 12 years of age – Statute 794.011-2a – are capital offenses against the former pastor of Palm View Baptist Church in Palmetto.
In a post to X, formerly Twitter, on Feb. 23, 2023, Elwing wrote that a website listing those “credibly accused” of sexual abuse in churches would be “the end of the [Southern Baptist Convention] SBC.”
According to his LinkedIn account, Ewing was pastor of Islamorada Baptist Church in the Florida Keys from December 2012 to November 2019, associate pastor for Hillsong Church from July 2008 to December 2012 and associate pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Punta Gorda from July 2003 to July 2006.
