NASHVILLE (BP) — Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams spent time Sunday, Dec. 29, assessing and preparing to mobilize following storms that left at least three dead and six injured from Texas and across the Southeast Saturday night.
The deaths — one in Texas and two in Mississippi — stemmed from a storm system that continued moving across the Southeast and spread to the Northeast today, said the National Weather Service. A marginal risk of excessive rainfall exists for South Florida.
Initial reports held the death count to two, but Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced on X Sunday at 1:05 p.m. that a second had been recorded in Lowndes County. Previously, he shared that one death and two injuries had been reported in Adams County.
At least 34 tornadoes were reported across five states on Saturday stretching from Texas to Alabama.
“I have reached out to the affected states and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams have begun assessment,” Send Relief’s Crisis Response Director Coy Webb shared with Baptist Press. “I am waiting to hear from this initial assessment to see what response may be needed. We are ready to respond with help, hope and healing to those affected if needed. Please pray for those affected across multiple states and for those still in the path of these severe storms.”
Team leaders in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee and Mississippi said needed response will be localized and will come from local teams.
